Opportunities for youngsters

A GROUP of young people from Tayside are being offered the chance to get on the career ladder with the Balhousie Care Group, who run Lisden Care Home in Kirriemuir, following their success on a Prince’s Trust training initiative.

Eleven previously unemployed young people took part in the ‘Get into Care’ programme, spending six weeks training on all aspects of elementary care and developing the skills necessary to access a career in the care industry.

The young people also achieved a series of industry recognised accreditations and completed work experience placements within Balhousie Care Homes.

Seven young people have secured employment with the Balhousie Care Group and will take up their posts in the next few weeks.

The young people marked their achievements at a celebration event with family and friends and took the opportunity to share their experiences and demonstrate their new skills. Tony Banks, chairman of Balhousie Care Group addressed the young participants and congratulated them on their success before presenting their certificates.

This is the second Get into Care programme The Prince’s Trust and the Balhousie Care Group have delivered with 16 young people moving directly into employment across both programmes.

The Trust’s Get into programmes are designed to give young people the skills and qualifications required to gain employment by providing them with work experience and industry recognised certification to access career opportunities in catering, mechanics, social care and youth work.

Tony Banks, chairman of Balhousie Care Group, said: “We are pleased to have been able to offer permanent jobs to the graduates of the second Get Into Care scheme, having watched them grow and develop both as individuals and as part of the team over the past few weeks.

“I believe businesses should be proactive about offering real job and training opportunities to young people, and the fact the young people have proved themselves and are about to become full-time carers is testament to this.

“Care is a vocation as well as a rewarding career that offers massive potential for personal development and once again we look forward to welcoming the students to Balhousie Care Group team.”

Delivery of the Get into Care programme is supported by the Wood Family Trust.
