The Maritime Rescue Institute’s Education Team is looking for a new member to take over a role that one of their volunteers carried out until moving away meant she had to leave the position.

Gillian Lomas was first recruited to join the Education Team after the 2010 Harbour Festival and had been a regular member of the team since, taking on a wide variety of tasks.

The team Gillian was involved in completed two major projects. One of these was a Treasure Chest of topics about the sea, coast boats and water safety in general, which was given to ten local primary schools. They also did a pilot project “Waterproofing” which was delivered to S1 and S2 pupils at Portlethen Academy. The team also delivered a full programme of activities for local schools and youth groups. Another aspect of the work is to develop ideas for future projects such as leadership and teamwork courses for school-leavers.

Gillian described the position as “enjoyable” and “rewarding” but is now moving to England and said: “I can heartily commend MRI for anyone with some spare time and a skill to offer. The education team could, in particular, use someone with the skills and contacts to take the projects already completed, package them and market them to other education authorities and elsewhere. There are also opportunities for volunteers in administration and finance.” To find out more contact Ann Laing, General Manager on 01569 765768 or ann.laing@maritime-rescue-institute.org.
