It is an achievement that most of us can only dream of but for one Forfar man lifting an Olympic medal became a reality last week.
After a closely contested tournament Greg Drummond and his Team GB teammates skip David Murdoch, Michael Goodfellow, Scott Andrews and Tom Brewster took the silver medal for curling after champions Canada knocked them out in the final 9-3.
But Team GB put on some stunning performances in the run-up to the last day with a 6-5 win over a tricky Swedish side seeing them through to the final.
Mike Ferguson, managing director of Forfar Indoor Sports where Greg started his curling career, spoke of how proud everyone in Forfar is of Greg’s success.
He said: “Well-deserved congratulations go to Greg and the rest of men and women’s Team GB curling teams.
“With Greg scoring some of the highest percentages in the tournament, credit must truly go to his determination and commitment not only during the competition but throughout the years of training and personal sacrifice.
“We look forward to welcoming Greg back to Forfar when we can congratulate him in person for all his efforts and the tremendous boost he has given the sport of curling.”
Angus Provost Helen Oswald added: “Everyone in the county is immensely proud of Greg’s success. He is a great ambassador for his sport and for Angus and I’d like to extend my congratulations to him and the rest of the curling team.”
There were also some words of support from local curling clubs.
Jill Donald from Fothringham Curling Club said: “We are all immensely proud of Greg Drummond’s and the team GB’s performance at the Winter Olympics.
“They all demonstrated great sportsmanship and etiquette throughout the whole competition and we are all honoured to have him as a brother curler.
“I’m sure there will be a drink or 20 at the bar the next time you are home, showing everyone your silver medal!”
Isobel Keillor from Kirrie Ladies Curling Club added: “What a week it has been for curling! Kirrie Ladies congratulate both the women’s team and the men’s team who have brought home medals from Sochi.
“They have done both Scotland and Britain proud.”
Look out for an exclusive interview with Greg later today.
