Looking for something to do during the Easter break? The Signal Tower in Arbroath has a special themed craft day next week.

On Tuesday, March 29, at the Signal Tower Museum children will have the opportunity to make their own Great War Princess Mary Gift Tin.

During the first Christmas of World War One, Princess Mary, the third child and only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, wanted to ensure that every soldier, sailor and nurses serving in military hospitals would receive a Christmas gift from the nation. The Princess Mary Christmas Gift Fund was launched on the October 14, 1914, and the response to the public appeal was overwhelming. The contents varied but a decorative brass tin containing a lighter, tobacco, a pipe, sweets, spices, pencil, writing paper, Christmas card and a picture of the Princess were issued to the men.

Come to the museum to find out more about these interesting objects and make your own Princess Mary Gift Tin. The event is free but booking is essential. Contact the museum staff on 01241 435329.
