A new beer has been launched in the Vine & Monkey pub in Forfar, designed to both satisfy the growing number of ‘real’ ale drinkers and to support Forfar Athletic Football Club.
The idea from proprietor and Loons fan Ian Whyte has taken months to get from proposal to pump. After mooting the idea to a number of small brewers, receiving support of the club, tasting a number of possible contenders and negotiating a purchase price for a regular house ale, Ian is now delighted to offer the new beer, Loons Ale, brewed by Inveralmond Brewery of Perth.
The beer is a 4.2% (ABV) amber ale and was sampled for the first time by a few fans, players past and present and members of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) after Forfar’s derby win over Brechin.
Loons legend and all-time top goal-scorer John Clark described it as “pretty good and easy to drink”, while the two CAMRA tasters said it had a “biscuity malt aroma, a very smooth mouthfeel, medium bitterness that lasted a long time” and “a classic bitter with a taste of grassy hops, medium body, mainly dry and nicely balanced.”
Ian said: “The upshot of it all is that 40 pence of every pint sold goes to Forfar Athletic and hopefully everybody benefits.
