Pupils from Whitehills Primary School in Forfar have booked themselves a place in the regional finals of a ‘Fun in Athletics’ Competition.
The pupils won the Angus Final hosted by the Angus Council Sports Development Team in partnership with Angus Active Schools on Wednesday.
The final brought this Angus-wide programme to a close after six festivals took place across the county, designed to give children an introduction to athletics through lots of fun track and field events in a team-based environment.
The programme has seen teams of up to 15 boys and 15 girls in P6/7 from 33 primary schools across the county take part in relay races, javelin, speed bounce, standing long jump, standing triple jump and vertical jump events.
As part of the Support a Second Country initiative through sportscotland in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014, all primary schools had chosen their second country to support with various activities and projects taking place throughout the curriculum.
Councillor Craig Fotheringham, vice-convener of the Angus Steering Group Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014, said: “It is great to see so many schools enjoying the Fun in Athletics events and taking the chance to Support a Second Country as the build-up to the Games gathers pace.”
The Angus finalists were Birkhill, Borrowfield, Whitehills, Burnside, Timmergreens and Andover. Whitehills and Timmergreens progress to the regional finals.
