SUSAN CALLS TIME ON 35-YEAR TEACHING CAREER

A TEACHING career spanning 35 years came to an end when the bell rang at Aberlemno Primary School last Thursday to mark the start of the summer holidays.

Head teacher Susan Steel bid a fond farewell to her last group of pupils and her colleagues before a surprise buffet lunch with members of staff.

The staff also presented her with a Jersey pearl pendant and a pearl and moonstone bracelet.

In the evening the School Parent Council hosted a barbecue attended by around 150 guests including staff, parents and former pupils to celebrate her 31 years of teaching in the Aberlemno parish.

Originally from Perth, Susan did her teacher training at Murray House in Edinburgh and began her teaching career at Warrdykes Primary in Arbroath, where she spent two years.

After marrying her husband Harry, she taught for two years in Glasgow but returned to Forfar when her husband took up employment with Angus Council.

She worked in the Hydro Board for two years before taking up a teaching post in Aberlemno.

She was made acting head teacher at nearby Pitkennedy Primary School and was then appointed head teacher about one year later.

When the Pitkennedy and Aberlemno primaries merged she was appointed head teacher at Aberlemno.

Away from teaching, Susan has a keen interest in amateur dramatics and is a member of Forfar Dramatic Society.

Her other interests are reading and walking.

Susan and her husband now live in Kirriemuir and her immediate plans for her retirement include a couple of holidays, including a cruise.
