ANGUS Council will give the National Trust for Scotland £20,000 towards the promotion of the Camera Obscura and Barrie Pavilion at Kirriemuir Hill.

The money will be allocated under the council’s Survive and Thrive Cultural Heritage Awards Scheme for 2013/14 and 2014/15.

Jeanette Gaul, Vice-Convener of Neighbourhood Services, said: “We are pleased to work in partnership to help NTS in their efforts to promote the Camera Obscura and the Barrie Pavilion as key attractions for visitors at Kirriemuir Hill.

“The money will provide training support for the staff at the Camera Obscura and also use the Barrie Pavilion to promote not only the Kirriemuir visitor attractions, but also those throughout Angus run by both the council and NTS.”

She added: “Sir J. M. Barrie had a vision for Kirriemuir Hill, which was to provide enjoyment and benefit for the community, and this initiative ties in with his ideas. Enhancements to the pavilion and Camera Obscura will complement the new heritage and nature trail and Neverland play area already being enjoyed by local people and visitors alike.”

John McKenna, NTS Property Manager for the Camera Obscura, J. M. Barrie’s Birthplace and the House of Dun said: “This is a welcome boost for the Trust’s work in Angus. We are fortunate to care for some of the area’s most precious and important heritage sites.

“This additional funding will help us to shout about those places even more loudly, attracting more visitors to the area to enjoy our rich heritage and contribute to the local economy.”
