STREET LIGHTS DIMMING PROJECT DEEMED A HIT

THE dimming of street lights in parts of Angus has been hailed a success and the trial will now be extended to other suitable sites.

Angus Council agreed last March to dim street lights in some residential and industrial areas between midnight and 6am in a bid to reduce the council's carbon footprint and energy use.

Street lights in six residential areas across Angus have now either been dimmed by 30% or had lower energy white lights installed and residents have been surveyed about the resulting lighting levels.

Amongst those areas were Hillhead Terrace, Kirriemuir, and Gagiebank, Wellbank.

Commenting on the trial, infrastructure services convener David May said it was interesting that despite some people's initial misgivings about reducing lighting levels, 71% of those who responded to the survey had noticed no difference.

"These reduced lighting levels still meet British Standard requirements so perhaps it's not too surprising that the majority of those surveyed had noticed no difference," said councillor May.

"Reduced wattage white lighting was particularly popular with 80% of respondents. This type of lighting is now being installed as standard in new housing developments."

The convener concluded by saying: "The introduction of white street lighting and the extension of the dimming trial to other suitable sites will help the council reduce its carbon footprint and in the longer term hopefully bring down our energy bill."

Lighting levels on all main and distributor roads and in town centres are not included in the scheme and will remain as they are.

Hanick Terrace, Forfar, has been earmarked as one of the lighting scheme areas to be completed by the end of March.
