STILL LOOKING INTO DON STREET HOLE

WORK to discover exactly why a sink-hole opened up in Forfar's Don Street is still taking place, despite the void being temporarily filled to make it safe.

The hole adjacent to the pedestrian entrance to Tesco's car park had appeared early in June, but at that time was no bigger than the size of a manhole.

An investigation by Scottish Water claimed that the hole was created not by their property, but by a culvert, which lies within the council's responsibility.

Angus Council staff were carrying out further investigations into the hole on Tuesday morning, but struck a water main, causing homes and businesses in various areas across the town to either be without a supply or with reduced pressure until Scottish Water took action to reroute supply lines.

The burst main also led to the postponement of some court business, after Sheriff Kevin Veal expressed concerns over witnesses having no access to water or toilets.

Furthermore, the incident caused additional damage to the Don Street road surface, expanding the size of the hole. The area has now been cordoned off and temporarily filled to make it safe.

A spokesperson for Angus Council said: "Investigations are still ongoing with Scottish Water and we are looking to undertake repairs to the culvert where there is known deterioration. The area has been backfilled for safety meantime while a contractor is sought."

Scottish Water apologised to anyone affected by the burst.

A spokesperson for the operator said: "Scottish Water engineers redistributed the local water mains network in Forfar after external contractors burst a trunk main whilst completing repairs to a damaged road surface.

"The water main was repaired by the early evening with only a handful of customers out of supply for that length of time. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise to customers who were affected by this burst."
