President Ian Stewart welcomed 42 Probus members to an enthralling talk and slideshow on the NASA Space Centre in Houston, the Shuttle programme and science education from John Beaton MBE.
John, a Dundee native, was educated at Harris Academy and apprenticed to Bonar Long in engineering & draughtsmanship. He completed his National Service with REME Parachute Brigade and in 1973 he founded Kolfor Plant, which grew to be the largest privately owned plant and equipment company in the North Sea Oil industry.
In recognition of his national and international endeavours for the city he was awarded the ‘City of Discovery Rosebowl’ in 1990, an MBE in 1994 and a Dundee Civic Reception in 2001 in addition to honorary fellowships from both Dundee and Abertay Universities.
In 2007 John helped create the Discovery STEM Space School, encouraging local youngsters to consider science as a future career.
