SNP BRANCH REFLECTS ON SUCCESSFUL YEAR

THE Forfar Branch of the Scottish National Party held its annual general meeting at the Chapelbank Hotel recently.

Branch convener Lynne Devine reflected on a successful year for the branch with many members playing an important part in campaigning in Angus and in by elections in other areas. She noted the "fantastic result" achieved by the party in the European Election in Angus where the SNP took almost twice as many votes as the Conservatives and contributed greatly to the re-election of two SNP MEPs.

Guest speaker Mike Weir MP also thanked branch members for their huge contribution to campaigning in Angus, outlined the coming General Election campaign, and reminded members that narrowing national polls raised the real prospect of no party having an overall majority.

He said: "The SNP Government in Edinburgh has brought real change to Scotland with positive action for business and families that has helped many through these very difficult economic times.

"It is vital in the coming election that we have a strong SNP group in London to speak up for local communities and protect Scotland from the swingeing cuts proposed by both Labour and Tories.

"Almost one third of those in employment in Angus work directly in the public sector whilst many more rely on contracts with them. This injects a huge amount into the local economy.

"Massive cuts now risk plunging Angus back into recession."

The main office bearers elected were: convener Lynne Devine; vice-convener Councillor Glennis Middleton; secretary Elaine Gray; organiser Fraser Milne.
