Snowdrop Festival in Angus
THREE of the finest gardens and estates in Angus are getting involved in this year’s Snowdrop Festival, which runs from February 2 until March 17.
The House of Dun, in Montrose, Pitmuies Gardens at Guthrie, by Forfar, and Dunninald Castle and Gardens, near Montrose, join with others around Scotland in the festival, which highlights the best locations to see the wonderful array of this year’s spring snowdrops.
The festival, now in its seventh year, is the perfect event to remind people of the beauty of Scotland in the winter months and is a welcome boost for gardens, woodlands and the surrounding tourism businesses as the industry goes through its traditionally quieter months.
Nearly 50 gardens are taking part throughout Scotland, from grand castle grounds and abbeys to small private gardens. As in previous years, one of the highlight events is ‘Snowdrops by Starlight’ at the Cambo Estate in Fife between February 13 and 17.
The versatility of the snowdrop means that they grow in a wide range of locations and people can see more than 300 varieties of this delicate white flower. From the grand gardens of Blair Castle to the historic grounds of Dryburgh Abbey, there is plenty to see which celebrates and embraces this, the Year of Natural Scotland.
Some of the gardens are not usually open to the public and this is the perfect opportunity to see behind the walls of the country’s hidden treasures.
