Rotary help make Christmas a real community occasion
The QUESTION is “What do you call a demolisher, painter, electrician. joiner, driver, postman and charity collector?” Well over November and December it is quite likely you would be referring to a member of Forfar Rotary.
Since November the club has demolished an old caravan and created a new Santa Sleigh, brought Santa to the Cross and replied to between 550 and 600 letters collected from children who handed them to Santa and his helpers.
This was followed by 11 nights, between December 3 and 19, when the sleigh with Santa aboard called on as many streets as possible with a collection for local charities. They were assisted in this by volunteers from various local organisations and they in turn will have financial reward for their efforts.
The street by street collection and visit by Santa was taken over by the Rotary Club when the Round Table ceased to function due to lack of membership and the club has put in a lot of effort to make it a success. Of course the club is aware that there are some who will have been disappointed but considering the enormity of the task, it has been warmly received by the community as a whole.
This has been achieved by Forfar Rotary members who have given up a lot of their time and has cost absolutely nothing to the local authorities. Thanks to outside help from local businesses and to the public of Forfar for their support over many years.
As an example of a typical collection night it would start for Rotarians at 5.30 p.m. and finish around 10 p.m. by the time the sleigh was stored and money counted and bagged.
Many of the Rotarians helped but it would not be right not to commend Sandy Ogilvie for his work helping to make the sleigh, organising the event at the Cross and for being the organiser of the town visits where he was out every night just to make sure all went smoothly. The club is due him a huge debt of gratitude.
