AS REHEARSALS continue for Tayside Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of 2013, which takes place on February 2 in the Reid Hall, members are preparing to mark their 20th anniversary.

The orchestra came together in May, 1993, for a one-off charity concert under the baton of Forfar conductor Ron Walker, and since then has gone from strength to strength.

It has an enviable reputation for being a happy and welcoming band of musicians which has been privileged to perform with a host of stunning soloists, playing some of the “big works” for orchestras and performing with large choirs and wonderful soloists.

On the eve of their 20th anniversary, Brechin clarinetist Robert Thomson has paid tribute to the vision of Ron Walker, and his dedication over the years.

He said: “It never ceases to amaze me just how many works I hear on broadcasts, either when travelling or simply sitting at home, that have been performed by TSO. This is largely due to the commitment of Ron Walker who, over the years, has been totally focussed on all aspects of TSO, from rehearsing and conducting the orchestra to acting as librarian, mentor, principal fund-raiser and generally eating and sleeping TSO.

“Ron has done so much unsung work for music in this area over the years; TSO is a tribute and testament to that work.”
