Retreat back in business for the summer season
WITH the Glenesk Retreat now open again after a winter break, visitors will be welcomed to a new world of familiar and favourite things.
The Retreat is vibrant with new ideas and opportunities including new opening times, new museum displays, new menu, new interior design, together with a bar warmed by a wood burning stove, while as ever, welcoming old friends and new with a traditional glen welcome.
Volunteers at the Retreat’s acclaimed Glenesk Folk Museum have been working hard over the winter to create a fascinating new display of agricultural life in the old stables known as the Green Shed.
Visitors can now enjoy an extensive array of farming tools and machinery from as early as the eighteenth century, together with a magnificent collection of horses’ harnesses in the cobbled stables. This project was supported by a grant from Museums Galleries Scotland.
The museum continues in the main building, telling the story of lives in the glen over hundreds of years with replica rooms, children’s dressing up and toys from the Victorian era many of which can be bought in the newly stocked shop. All museum entrance is now free.
In the restaurant a small exhibition of works by much admired Victorian artist David Waterson, hangs on newly decorated walls. Over the season there will be other exhibitions of paintings from the museum collection.
Jean Stewart, a local businesswoman, and Marshall Wilkie, have been developing new aspects for the new season at the retreat. Jean said: “We have been very busy all winter. Just this week an Italian coffee machine arrived, for producing the very best coffees and hot chocolates.
“The team now includes Brian Park of The Sauchieburn Hotel and chef Graham Horton from Glamis Castle. It will be a wonderful adventure for anyone to come up the Glen for the big skies, the fresh air and a warm welcome at the Retreat.”

Please note that The Retreat will be open at the new time of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every weekend and over the Easter holidays from Friday, March 29 to Sunday, April 7.
From May 6 it will be open every day for the summer season.
