PLANS FOR U3A GROUP IN FORFAR

STEPS are being taken to set up a new group in Forfar aimed specifically at those in their "third age".

U3A (or The University of the Third Age) already has well established groups in Dundee and Arbroath and it is hoped a Forfar group can bet set up.

A meeting to gauge interest is to be held at the Forfar Academy Community Wing on Wednesday, February 10 at 1.30 pm when further details on the group can be explained.

The Third Age refers to the period of time after the First Age of childhood dependence and the Second Age of full-time employment and parental responsibility.

One in four of the UK population is in the Third Age.

U3A is a learning co-operative of older people which enables members to share many educational, creative and leisure activities.

It is a university in the original sense of the word: a collective of people devoted to learning, with members, not students, all of whom are in their Third Age.

Anyone in the Third Age can join, including those who are working part time. No qualifications are required and non are given.

U3As exist to provide education and leisure activities for men and women. They draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their members to organise interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership.

Between them the U3As offer over 300 subjects in such diverse fields as art, foreign languages, music, history, life sciences, literature, poetry, gardening, crafts, archaeology and computing.

The U3A approach to learning is – learning for pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained.

Anyone interested is invited along to the meeting next Wednesday. Further details from Mary Heath on (01307) 466540 or www.u3a.ork.uk
