PICTURE THIS IN THE FRAME FOR GLORY AT HAMPDEN

A small group of sixth year pupils from Webster's High School are in the frame for national success when they take part in the Scottish final of the Young Enterprise competition at Hampden Park today (Wednesday).

The five pupils - Stuart Cameron, Rachel Stott, Emily Hood, Gareth Matheson and Francis Nicholson - won their place in the final after picking up the Tayside title at Grove Academy in March.

The 'Picture This' company impressed the judges, winning the business plan and company report sections.

Out of an initial entry of 15 teams, 13 dropped out along the way, leaving the Kirriemuir team to battle it out against Grove Academy in the final.

Their victory booked them a place in the Scottish final where they will compete against 16 other finalists.

Up for grabs is the top prize of a funded trip to London and a cash prize with the winners competing against 11 other regions for the British final on July 14.

Picture This was set up last August and since then the pupils, guided by their business advisor Mrs Helen Stott of Delson Contracts Ltd. and link teacher Sarah Canham, have been completely focused on developing their various initiatives to secure a place in the national final.

Funding

The company chose to set up a photography service as its initial business venture and funding from a band night, organised by two directors of the company, provided additional funding.

The pupils set up a family and friends photography service within the school with the stage in the main hall set up as a studio for portrait sittings.

The initiative was extended to Tannadice Primary School and a further off-shoot involved Picture This taking photographs with children in Santa's Grotto last Christmas.

The photographs were available on the night, printed as the customer waited.

During their weekly meetings the pupils developed a range of further products including Christmas cards and wreaths and personalised towels and face cloths which they sold within the school and at trade and Christmas fayres.

Their product range was taken to a wider customer base when the Webster's pupils took part in a trade fayre in the Wellgate Centre, Dundee last November, when they picked up valuable points by winning this section of the competition.

An added incentive for the company members was a company bonus which was paid out last December.

The Young Enterprise Scotland programme is designed to "inspire and prepare all young people to succeed in a global economy."

The pupils are responsible for appointing positions within the company, producing a company report and attending board meetings.

On the eve of the competition Stuart Miller, chief executive, Young Enterprise Scotland said: "The Young Enterprise Scotland Awards 2010 are a true celebration of excellence.

"Picture This from Webster's High School will join 16 other YES teams from throughout Scotland at the Scottish Awards in Hampden Park.

"All of these young people have shown true entrepreneurial spirit and developed real life business skills which will stand them in good stead for the future.

"Scotland needs entrepreneurial and enterprising young people and we wish all of our finalists - including Picture This - the very best of luck for the finals."
