A LITTLE bit of Forfar’s past has been unearthed during extensive renovation work to the Queen’s Hotel in the centre of town.
As part of a major refurbishment of Troopers Bar on the ground floor, owners Alan Storrier and Steve Cumming of Tayfield Investments have uncovered a selection of photographs - some local and some not so local - which they hope will be incorporated into the new look bar area.
The photographs include one dating back to the late 1970s/early 1980s and show a collection of snapshots from one of the popular band nights of that time,
They feature well-known Dundee saxophonist Peter Benedetti and other band members who were regulars at the bar at their popular live music nights. Other photographs show American President John F Kennedy giving a speech on a lawn, whilst others feature war scenes dating back to the Great War and the trenches in France. Another one is a framed certificate for distinguished service.
One impressive photograph with local links unfortunately has no date. It features Lt. Bowes Lyon of Glamis. The kilted regiment comprises 33 soldiers, including Lt. Col. Grant Duff, in distinctive uniform - do you know where and when the photograph was taken?
Tragically, 11 of the soldiers - exactly one third, including Lt. Bowes Lyon and Lt. Col. Duff - are listed as Killed in Action.
Tayfield Investments had put the renovation work of the bar area on hold last year, but it’s all systems go for the new look.
Steve said: “We have decided to go ahead as the time is now right and we are confident of the future. This will be a six-figure investment which will create more part-time jobs.”
The bar will have a cafe type atmosphere, serving coffee in the mornings, lunches and then high teas. The work will be completed within six to eight weeks and, when finished, the bar will have a new look and a new name.
Steve added: “We’ve uncovered these photographs which are a snapshot of the history of the Queens; we will probably clean them up, re-frame them and give them some place in the pub later on.” It’s business as usual in the rear bar at the hotel and with the Thursday karaoke nights with Lisa.
