No further  controls are needed for guns

The Scottish Countryside Alliance (SCA) welcomes the news of the major reduction in gun crime in Scotland, particularly that involving air weapons.

This shows that existing measures to protect the public are working well. There is no need for further controls.

Jamie Stewart, a director of Scottish Countryside Alliance, said: “Subjecting airgun owners to stricter controls will involve a massive bureaucratic effort and take police off the streets in order to deal with the paperwork and enforcement of a law which will not accelerate the welcome downwards trend.

“New regulations will only penalise legitimate gun owners.

“Criminals who don’t play by the rules will breathe a sigh of relief if new laws sidetrack police attention towards the thousands of law-abiding rural Scottish people who use airguns for pest control and sport.”

The Scottish Countryside Alliance is opposed to the fragmentation of Firearms legislation in the United Kingdom, primarily because of the many people from Scotland who shoot in England, and those from south of the Border who shoot here.

The UK’s gun laws are some of the strictest in the world and place a heavy burden on the certificate holder to ensure that they are used and stored safely and securely.

If there are different standards on either side of the Border, it could lead to problems for those travelling to Scotland for legitimate sporting activities. Mr Stewart added: “The Justice Secretary should recognise that these sports provide a huge boost to rural communities over the winter months.”
