NOW THAT a design has been agreed for the new medals for Arctic convoys and Bomber Command, surviving veterans and widows will begin to receive their medals.

The Ministry of Defence have confirmed that production of the Arctic Star medal and the Bomber Command clasp is due to begin this week.

Up to 250,000 veterans or heirs will be eligible for the honour.

Welcoming the news Angus MSP Mr Weir said: “I am very pleased that the UK Government has done the right thing and awarded medals to these brave servicemen. It is sad that so many who survived the convoys have not lived to receive their medals and it is right and proper that their widows will also be amongst the first to receive the awards. I hope that their children will also be allowed to claim medals where there is no surviving widow.

“The decision to award these medals is long overdue but it is a vindication for the many people who have campaigned over the years for this recognition of the incredible bravery shown by those involved both in the convoys and in bomber command.”

“I am delighted that these veterans, both of the arctic convoys and bomber command, are finally to receive the recognition that they properly deserve, but this is also a moment to reflect and remember those servicemen who have not lived to see this day.

“There have been incredible sacrifices with over 3,000 lives lost in the convoys to ensure that Russia remained supplied to fight on the Eastern Front, which was critical to the success of the overall war effort.”
