KIRRIEMUIR textile company, J&D Wilkie, which recently secured ‘the UK’s highest accolade for business success’, has appointed a solicitor as its new business development director.

J&D Wilkie Limited, a family business which has been operating from Kirriemuir for 144 years, has appointed qualified Solicitor and Notary Public Jean-Christophe Granier.

Aberdeen-based Mr Granier (29) qualified as a solicitor in 2008 and was an Associate at Stronachs LLP before moving to J&D Wilkie Limited. In recent years, he has been heavily involved in the development of new business processes within the legal sector and has decided his skills would be transferable to the manufacturing industry.

Originally established in 1868, J&D Wilkie Limited specialises in the manufacture of technical textiles with a primary market for filtration fabrics. The company also designs and manufactures ballistic and stab resistant body armour vests under the brand name of Jack Ellis.

Mr Granier said: “I view myself as a commercially minded solicitor with a keen interest in the operations and processes of the businesses I have worked with.

“I have built up an extensive and diverse network of contacts and believe that this network, coupled with my legal training, will prove invaluable when facing and overcoming the challenges of my new role.

“J&D Wilkie Limited is a major player in the technical textile market and I was very keen to join a company steeped in such illustrious history.

“I am proud to have joined the company and look forward to being part of the team that, together, ensures the company realises its undoubted potential.”

J&D Wilkie recently received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade for its outstanding commercial success and its growth in overseas sales of 207 per cent over the last three years. The company set up production in China five years ago in response to market demand, enabling them to become a global supplier for the technical textiles market and resulting in increased activity in Kirriemuir.

Welcoming Mr Granier, Bob Low, Managing Director said, “Our recent award for export and our ambitious growth targets signal exciting times for J&D Wilkie Limited and we are confident that Jean-Christophe will make a significant contribution to the company’s future.”
