NET 'CLOSING' IN ON ANTI-SOCIAL TENANTS

A stark warning has gone out to anti-social tenants, who make the lives of their neighbours a misery, that Tayside Police will act to have them removed.

The warning came on Monday after Tayside Police issued a Closure Order on the house at 30 Glamis Road, Kirriemuir, following a catalogue of complaints regarding anti-social behaviour within the premises over a sustained period.

A closure order is an option available to the police under the Anti-Social Behaviour Legislation, giving them the power to close a premises for a minimum period of three months.

Sergeant Iain Leiper of the Angus Council Joint Services Team said: "Although a closure order is a police led operation, we have been assisted and supported at every stage of the process by our partners within Angus Council.

"This action today underlines the commitment of both Tayside Police and Angus Council to protect our communities, and demonstrates our willingness to work together to ensure Angus is a much safer place to live."

Officers arrived at the ground floor flat at lunchtime on Monday to serve the order on the two occupants, and to board up the premises.

The action followed a court case in the morning at the town's sheriff court when the order was passed.

"Empty threats"

Sergeant Leiper said it serves as a warning to other anti-social tenants in the area that the police were not just issuing "empty threats" but would take action as and when necessary.

He praised the partnership approach taken by the police and Angus Council and wished to highlight the work they had undertaken in the community.

"There is a lot of community interest with this and a lot of people have been aware of what has been going on.

"This had gone on for a couple of months. A number of residents have suffered greatly as a consequence of a wide variety of anti-social behaviour, from noise from parties to excessive drinking."

He praised those who had come forward with information to help the police with their enquiries, and urged those in similar circumstances not to suffer in silence.

Only last week the "Dispatch" and Herald" highlighted an on-going drug problem in Viewmount in Forfar, where one resident is now afraid to leave her home because of the antics of local drug addicts and dealers.

Sergeant Leiper continued: "We would encourage people suffering in such circumstances not to suffer in silence. Both Tayside Police and Angus Council are certainly willing to consider taking action where appropriate.

"The intention of the order is to enable residents to enjoy the peace and tranquillity they have every right to expect.

"This shows we are not making empty threats - we will close premises where relevant.

"The police and the council are determined to offer the community every element of support they can."

A spokesperson for Angus Council said: "Angus Council has worked with Tayside Police to find the most effective resolution to the recent ongoing problems in Kirriemuir.

"As a council, we commend and support this course of action.

"The council will continue to work with its partners to find the most appropriate measures to tackle the significant and persistent instances of anti social behaviour."
