A BRAVE mother and daughter who took on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for charity last year have raised over £2,500.
Krystyna Baxter (66), a retired health visitor who worked in Kirriemuir, and Kirsty Baxter (40), a major in the army, decided to do the climb in aid of the charity Diabetes UK as some of their family and friends suffer from the disease.
It took a total of six days to get up to the summit of the 19,341 foot mountain and they completed the challenge in October last year.
Krystyna said: “We would like to pass on our sincere thanks to family and friends for their generosity in supporting us and also Tesco, Forfar for allowing a collection can on December 10, which raised £162.”
The total raised for Diabetes UK is £2,594.68 which was raised through sponsorship for the trek up Kilimanjaro and which also includes £1252.18 which was raised through Kirsty’s Just Giving site.
There is also around £250 of gift aid due to be added on top of the total and this will be calculated by the charity sometime in the spring.
Diabetes UK would not be able to succeed without supporters such as Krystyna and Kirsty. They would be unable to continue their vital work funding research, providing information and campaigning on behalf of people with diabetes to improve the standards of care.
The pair, who took the same route up the mountain, La Mosha, as Comic Relief walkers, were looked after all the way. Porters, cooks and guides were on hand to help.
The mother and daughter duo said they made “friends for life” on the trek and Krystyna added: “We both had a fantastic time.”
The trip had been planned since the beginning of 2012 and was organised through the activity and adventure experts, Exodus.
The climb itself was paid for in full, by themselves, and all sponsor money raised went in aid of the diabetes charity, Diabetes UK.
