Glamis couple Fiona Young (46) and Jack Davies (66) are preparing for a 590km charity cycle in Madagascar next October.
This will be Jack’s eighth long distance charity cycle and Fiona’s fourth and they decided to take on the challenge to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Fiona and Jack met on a previous challenge in India and then went on to do another in Mexico in 2009 and Lands’ End to John O’ Groats in 2011.
Jack said: “This is going to be very hard work, but knowing that any money raised is going to such a wonderful charity that makes it all worthwhile.
“The hard work has already started with all the training needed, which will have to continue right up to leaving, and the fund-raising will continue during and after the trip. All the hard work will be worthwhile though if we manage to raise the £6,000 we are hoping for.”
Fiona added: “Starting in the capital Antananarivo we will be seeing a lot of the countryside as a lot of the route is mountainous and off the main roads.
“We will cycle through highland villages and paddy fields, the lush tropical fruit plantations and coastal trails.
“Far away from the modern comforts of daily life this will be an unforgettable experience. Having said all that, Marie Curie Cancer Care is the important part of all this.
“Although living with life-limiting illness can affect many aspects of a person’s life, information from Marie Curie can help them cope with some of the physical, emotional and practical issues they may face.”
The couple have already been fund-raising in a number of ways. Last week they held a charity shop in Coupar Angus and raised a magnificent £2,608. They will be holding a similar event next March.
They will also be holding coffee mornings, craft fairs and quizzes. On top of this, and the normal sponsorship, Jack will be running in various events including a half-marathon in Blackpool in February and the Virgin London Marathon in April.
You can sponsor Jack and Fiona by visiting their online page at www.justgiving.com/Jack-Fiona-Madagascar.
By paying with credit or debit card the money will go directly to Marie Curie Cancer Care and as Gift Aid is included this is the best way to sponsor.
