Two local businesses have come out on top at the World Scotch Pie Championships 2014 winning in the Steak and Gravy and Bridie categories.
Butcher James Pirie & Son won the gold award for a steak and gravy pie at the 15th annual awards.
Alan Pirie, from James Pirie & Son, said: “We are delighted with our win and can go away with our heads held very high indeed.
“To have been judged as one of the best in the land against so many of our peers is a huge achievement.”
Meanwhile, Letham-based Keptie Bakery Ltd has been presented with the gold award in the bridie category.
The ultimate prize and new holder of the title World Scotch Pie Champion 2014 went to The Kandy Bar of Saltcoats.
The awards ceremony followed the busiest judging day ever with a record entry of 100 butchers and bakers entering around 543 pies, pasties, sausage rolls, bridies, savouries and, for the first time, apple pies into the competition.
More than 200 hopefuls attended the awards luncheon in Dunfermline on Wednesday, January 15 and all the butchers and bakers shortlisted can truly be proud to have produced some of the best products in the land.
Robert Ross, head judge, said: “The competition, which has run for 15 years, aims to highlight that bakers and butchers create high quality artisan pastry products.”
Alan Clarke of Scottish Bakers, added: “Once again we have brought together the best pies and baked goods in the land and today we can really celebrate the achievement of our hard working butchers and bakers.
“My heartfelt congratulations go to our winner, and indeed everyone today taking away a prize, they are all winners in my book.”
The competition is supported by Scottish Bakers and the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders. Both trade associations actively support and promote bakers and butchers in Scotland by encouraging and sharing best practice.
Alan Clarke and Douglas Scott, respective chief executives of both associations, were impressed with the overall standard of the products and thanked competition sponsor Bako Northern and Scotland.
