Kirriemuir man Philip Aiken has been named as a baton bearer for the Commonwealth Games’ Queen’s Baton Relay in June.
A volunteer with girls’ football in the town for more than a decade, Mr Aiken has coached a number of secondary school teams and promoted the sport in local primary schools.
His dedication has involved him not only coaching and running regular games, but he has also taken time out of work to ferry teams to away matches, often with lengthy journeys.
So far five bearers across the county for the June 28 event have been named, with others to be revealed closer to the relay.
Welcoming the announcement, Councillor Jeanette Gaul, Angus Games Steering Group convener, said: “Congratulations to all the local athletes and community champions who will be carrying the baton.
“This announcement brings us one step closer to the Games in July and it’s good to see local people being given an opportunity to be part of this major event and hopefully inspire a new generation of young people to see the benefits of sport and leisure activities.”
