LEADER'S CONCERNS OVER BUDGET CUT IMPLICATIONS

THE chairman of Forfar Community Council has warned of the implications Angus Council's budget will have on the education of the town's children.

Speaking at this month's meeting, Mrs Isobel Ross said she was disappointed to read education, again, would suffer.

She said: "I wonder what the impact will be on the Curriculum for Excellence which the teachers have been very enthusiastic about.

"As far as I am concerned education is the key to the future of our children and grand-children.I hope the cuts are sensible and not something which, as a whole, will make the children suffer."

She also referred to the increase in cost for the community alarm and community meals, asking "what's not gone up?"

"Two bodies - children and older people, who don't have a voice - I'm disappointed."

Mrs Ross feared the closure of rural libraries could also have an impact on people.

"I wonder, rather than going mobile, could they not reduce the hours in the various premises. Perhaps they could open one half a day a week?"

The chairman felt libraries provided an important part in community life.

"A library is a place where you get a lot of information, where people in rural areas can socialise.

"The other concern is, with a winter like we have had, will the mobile vans always get through?

"We will just have to wait and see."

Mrs Ross referred to the 50,000 which will be spent on upgrading Letham play-park and took the opportunity to remind the meeting work was still to be done to up-grade the East Greens playpark in Forfar.

"As far as I was aware, there wasn't the money. We need toilets there, we need one or two other things."

She highlighted the proposed 450,000 improvement work to the Signal Tower Museum in Arbroath, suggesting savings could have been made there.

As for the reduction in the dog warden service in Angus she added: "The reduction from two to one will make irresponsible people even more irresponsible by not cleaning up their dog mess."
