KIRRIE DEVELOPER SUPPORTS BARRIE CELEBRATIONS

PLANS to mark the 150th anniversary of Kirriemuir-born author and playwright J. M. Barrie have been given a massive five-figure boost, thanks to the generosity of a local developer.

Members of Kirriemuir Heritage Trust's Barrie 2010 organising committee gathered in Kirrie Square last midweek to accept a sponsorship cheque from Guild Homes.

The 10,000 donation is a major boost to the organisation as members continue to piece together a mouthwatering programme of events to mark the 150th anniversary of Barrie's birth.

The main programme, under the title "A Celebration of Imagination" will run between May 7 and 23, to coincide with the famous playwright's May 9 birth date, although other events are planned outwith that period.

Mark Guild, managing director of Guild Homes, said: "Kirriemuir is our home town and is very important to us.

"We are delighted to take on the role of main sponsor of Barrie 2010 and to help promote this 150-year anniversary of J. M. Barrie.

"We believe the playwright and Kirriemuir go hand-in-hand and hope Barrie 2010 can help to further reinforce the position of the town and surrounding area as a place for tourists to visit.

"We hope the forthcoming celebration can help raise people's awareness of Kirriemuir and what it has to offer.

"J. M. Barrie was a great benefactor, gifting such things as the camera obscura on the Hill to the town," continued Mr Guild.

"As a company we want to put something back into Kirriemuir in the same way. Last year we supported the drive to create an all-weather sports facility at Webster's High School, this year we are sponsoring Barrie 2010, and next year it will be something else.

"The whole community should benefit from our house-building success in the town."

Despite the credit crunch that led to many local building programmes coming to a standstill over the past year, Guild Homes have been pressing on with their development at Kinnordy View in Kirriemuir - with phase two nearing completion and interest being shown in the phase three housing about to come on stream.

Barrie 2010 chairman Sandra Affleck said: "We are most grateful to Guild Homes for their generous sponsorship and we will endeavour to deliver quality with our festival programme."
