JUNCTION BRANDED 'CRAZY AND STUPID'
KIRRIEMUIR community councillors have branded a recently-created junction in Lindsay Street "crazy and stupid."
And, at the monthly meeting held last midweek, it was agreed to write to Angus Council's roads department, asking officials to revisit it before work is carried out to resurface the whole stretch of the arterial route to the west of town.
Safety fears over the re-aligned part of Lindsay Street, to allow for a new entrance to be created into a housing development at the Mortar Holes, were first raised at the September meeting of the community council, and re-itterated last week.
Councillors are concerned that, on a dark, foggy night, motorists will happen across the jutting-out kerb and an unsuspecting pedestrian could be knocked down.
John Howe told members that there have already been three incidents whereby vehicles have struck the kerb.
"If it's a lorry or tractor mounting the kerb at the Mortar Holes someone could be run down. In my view, it's a stupid, crazy junction."
Members were informed that the developer would have had to create a junction that complied with guidelines on sightlines - and it wouldn't have come cheap.
However, community councillors remain unconvinced that roads officials have got it right.
"For motorists following the line of the road, the junction just jumps out at them," commented Kit Findlay.
Mr Howe suggested that the community council ask roads officials to have another look at the junction, before work is undertaken to resurface the entire length of Lindsay Street.
Charlie Knight agreed. "If we are going to be an effective community council, acting as a voice for the community, we have got to show a bit of teeth - especially when something like this is causing so much concern."
Community councillors unanimously agreed to fire off a letter to the council's roads authority, expressing members' concern over the safety of pedestrians at the junction.
Members are also keen to learn the up-to-date position with regard to an issue with a gas pipe-line, which is holding up a start date to the work to resurface Lindsay Street, the condition of which continues to deteriorate.
