Help CHSS to help you

Stroke is the major cause of disability throughout Scottish communities and in Angus alone more than 3,000 people are living with the effects of this condition.

Medical charity Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland runs stroke services throughout the country and is appealing for volunteers to help operate its local services which are run by coordinator Jill Thain, as she explains: “Our Community Services support people who have had a stroke, helping them with communication difficulties and offering support and social activities.

“The service depends entirely on the help of local volunteers and all that’s needed is a willingness to help others. Full training is given and expenses reimbursed.”

Jill continued: “We’ve had lots of new referrals to our stroke support services and now urgently need volunteers in the Carnoustie and Forfar area.

“Volunteers work on a one to one basis with people who have had a stroke and been left with communication difficulties, supporting them to achieve their individual goals.

“These goals can either be around the home or out in the community, for example a shopping trip, library visit, or attending a local event.

“Activities like these help to rebuild confidence after a stroke and make a big difference to people’s quality of life.

“We also need volunteers living in the Brechin and Edzell area to visit stroke survivors while still in hospital, working with them on a one to one basis and helping them overcome communication difficulties before being discharged.”

Volunteering gives you the opportunity to learn new skills and use existing ones, meet interesting people and work as part of a team. You can put something back into your community and make a real difference in someone’s life.
