HANDY INFO FOR THOSE PLANNING TO VISIT KIRRIE
AS Kirriemuir settles down after unprecedented worldwide publicity in recent months local historian Sandra Affleck has provided some handy information to ensure the Little Red Town continues to attract visitors.
She feels the following information may be useful to residents, business people and visitors and whilst she reminds visitors many businesses continue to close on Thursday afternoon, refreshments can still be obtained at several cafes, restaurants and hotels.
She explained Angus Ahead has just published "Welcome to the sights and sounds of Kirriemuir and Dean" which has a clear Kirriemuir map, a list of 23 places to eat and drink, including some offering accommodation too; nine visitor attractions with telephone contact numbers to verify opening hours, and other useful phone numbers.
She said: "The Kirriemuir and Dean Community Planning Team is about to issue an "Events Listing" for July, August and September which provides information about what is on where and when.
"Both these are distributed widely around the town but can be obtained from the Access Office at 5 Bank Street, as well as Kirriemuir Library in Reform Street (external works currently ongoing but open as usual) and the Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum in the Square.
"The Burgh Heritage Trail Leaflet published in partnership between Angus Council and Kirriemuir Heritage Trust is available to buy for 50p from the library and museum (and other Angus branches.)
"Local shopkeepers are welcome to purchase copies to sell on to customers, to enable them to get more out of their visit to the town.
"This leaflet lets visitors take a self-guided tour round the town and past its shops, including Southmuir and Northmuir. It also has an annotated map. The places listed are identified by a bronze plaque featuring Peter Pan."
The National Trust for Scotland publishes a booklet of its events and places to visit. This is available at all NTS outlets and on www.nts.org.uk.
For walkers of moderate ability, there are leaflets about the Angus Paths Network (all signposted) in and around Kirriemuir as well as Forfar and other burghs.
There are many leaflets about Outdoor Angus activities and other places of interest in the area. All of these are available, and free, as are bus timetables, at the library and at the Tourist Information Point, which is within Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum (01575 575479).
Sandra has also compiled a list of the key visitor attractions to the area.
