Great response to Laura’s fun day

Waiting for Video...

All roads led to the Murton Nature reserve on Sunday when the local community turned out in force to give their support to a major fund-raising effort to celebrate the life of Forfar Academy pupil Laura Forbes.

Fellow classmates of the popular teenager, who sadly passed away last year after battling cancer, were joined by supporters who visited a number of stalls and who enjoyed the fun and games to raise funds for four charities chosen by the school.

Laura’s parents Audrey and Donald Forbes, who attended the event, also played a major role by sourcing high-quality raffle prizes kindly donated by Dundee United which were auctioned on Facebook.

The money raised on the day will be split between Calum’s Cabin, Maggie’s Centre, Lippen Care and Insight Counselling.

The day started with a 10K run at 9.30 a.m. and a fun run at 1 p.m. Laura’s brother Daniel was on hand to present the prizes to the 10K winners – Brian Bonnyman who completed the course in a time of 36 minutes 29 seconds with first lady home Tracy Morgan completing with a time of 43 minutes 39 seconds.

Commenting on the support on the day Euan Gow, principal teacher of pupil care and support at Forfar Academy, said: “It has been fantastic. I arrived at 8 a.m. and the place hasn’t stopped. There is no way of guessing the number of people who have come in but the car park has been full all day.

“This is the third time we have had Laura’s Fun Day. The first was when Laura was in the middle of her treatment so we raised a lot of money for the family. It was a lovely day and was very well supported.

“We had another event planned for last year but Laura sadly died before it but again it was very well supported.

“This is now our third year and this is now the school’s major fund-raiser. The whole school, the whole community, is behind this. It is a positive day all round, a lovely day.”
