GRAND OPENING FOR FORFAR'S ALWORTHS STORE

THERE will be a real boost for the local jobs market and the local economy this Friday with the official opening of the new alworths store in Castle Street.

Angus Provost Ruth Leslie Melville and alworths managing director Andy Latham will perform the opening ceremony at 10 am., with the first lucky 200 people through the doors being presented with a free promotional cup of pic 'n' mix.

alworths, the general retailer that sells everything from branded toys to haberdashery, was due to open their first Scottish store in Cupar on Wednesday and they have plans to open a further eight stores in Scotland over time.

The Forfar store, in the former Woolworths building, will be a local variety store with a great range of products at value for money prices.

It will stock a large choice of pic 'n' mix and other sweets, branded toys, entertainment products, homeware and garden items together with stationery, party accessories, cards and wrap, haberdashery and household convenience purchases.

A team of 13 staff have already been employed at the new store, eight of whom are ex-Woolies staff.

The store trading manager will be Lynn Leavy, an ex-Woolies employee.

Lynn said: "I was delighted to be asked to be the trading manager of one of the first Scottish alworths stores. To be back working with many former colleagues is a great feeling and I'm looking forward to establishing alworths in the Forfar community."

The Scottish stores will be headed up by area manager Graham Johnston, also a former Woolworths employee.

Graham worked for Woolworths for 22 years, starting as a trainee store manager and working his way up through various management roles.

He was a field manager in January 2009 when the chain closed and since then he has been working for another large retailer.

He says: "My colleagues and I were devastated when Woolworths went into administration. It was a really sad time because working at Woolies was like being part of an extended family. It is such a fantastic feeling to be opening the ninth alworths store and re-employing former colleagues and friends."

The opening promises to be plenty of fun with music, balloons and the free promotional cups of pic 'n' mix for the first 200 customers through the door.

Andy Latham said: "We are really excited about opening our first two Scottish branches this week. There will be lots going on in-store and we look forward to welcoming as many local residents as can join us."
