GEARING UP FOR FORFAR GALA WEEK
ANOTHER Forfar Gala Week gets underway this Sunday - with a slight modification to the original programme.
Following the cancellation of the four-hour mountain bike and running event planned for the Reid Park, the accompanying music event has switched venues and will now take place this coming Sunday in the Myre - kicking off a week of activity.
The music event - running from 1 pm to 5 pm - will feature a number of local bands, including Safe2Say, The Standard, The White Light, Sonnet 65 and The Trade.
The programme of events, organised by Forfar and Area Partnership, then continues throughout next week - in the lead-up to the annual Gala Sunday (June 28).
Two local churches are participating, Forfar East & Old Parish staging tours, displays and videos throughout next week (see separate story), with St. John's Episcopal Church presenting recitals, an exhibition and a talk.
The Forfar Gala Fives, a football competition for under-11s, under-13s and under-15s, is to be staged in the Market Muir from Tuesday, June 23 to Sunday, June 28.
A photo competition, "Name the Parts of Forfar", will run from this Sunday, June 21, and the winners revealed on Gala Sunday.
A bowling match between Special Olympians and elected members of Angus Council is to take place at Forfar Indoor Sports on Tuesday evening of next week, with a tea dance to be staged in the Forfar branch headquarters of the Royal British Legion Scotland on Thursday, June 25, from 2 pm to 4.30 pm.
Other activities include witches walks from Forfar Town Hall on Thursday and Friday, June 25 and 26, a Firefly Youth Drama Workshop for pupils in P4 to S1 in St. John's Church hall on June 22, 25 and 26 and a Continental Market in the Myre from Friday to Sunday, June 26 to 28 (see story on page nine).
On Saturday, June 27 - the day before the gala Sunday - the Myre will play host to a falconry display and a dog show from 2 pm until 4 pm (registration from 1 pm).
There will be various pedigree and novelty classes, with entry at 1.
The big day is, of course, Sunday, June 28, with a programme of events ongoing at the Myre from 12 noon until 4.30 pm.
North Tayside MSP John Swinney will officially open the event and thereafter there will be a programme of activities throughout the afternoon - including many new attractions.
Entertainment will be provided by Forfar and District Pipe Band, Forfar Dramatic Society, Aphrodisiac, the Liz Low Dancers, Strathmore Rugby Club Sharks, Sonnet 65 and a group of bellydancers - while the afternoon will also feature an armed forces parade at around 1.45 pm.
Ringing the Myre perimeter will be a whole host of fund-raising and fun stands - 27 in all, while other attractions include a refreshment tent, a display by Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club, children's fun rides, the Youth Bytes Bus, pony rides, a Black Watch display and a cookery demonstration tent.
With everything in place for a week of gala celebrations, featuring a whole host of local groups and organisations, fingers are crossed for warm, dry weather, and healthy support from members of the public in Forfar and district and further afield.
