Funding help is available for any school or organisation in the Forfar and Kirriemuir areas keen to mark the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

With the Queen’s Baton relay due to pass close to home through both towns, as well as Glamis and Northmuir, on June 28 as part of its journey around Scotland and the county hosting the games’ shooting events at Barry Buddon, now would be the ideal time to start planning.

Grants of between £500 and £10,000 are available from the Lottery’s Celebrate Fund to support Commonwealth-themed events and some Angus groups’ applications have already been successful.

The fund was set up to encourage communities to come together to celebrate the Games and create a legacy of community and Commonwealth connections.

Arbroath-based dance group Showcase the Street has been awarded £10,000 to provide a programme of extra-curricular activities for schools including sport, dance and fashion sessions as well as educating children about different Commonwealth countries. Timmergreens Primary School, also Arbroath, has won £1,702 in funding to buy sporting equipment for its after school sports club and Carnoustie High School has been awarded £8,500 to run a local schools Commonwealth Games Project.

Councillor Jeanette Gaul, convener of the Angus Games Steering Group, said: “I am delighted that these projects are doing so much to capture the spirit of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. There is still time for local groups to apply for Celebrate funding if they want to hold an event before or during the 2014 Games.

“It would be excellent to keep this momentum building over the coming months and I encourage local groups to come forward with their ideas for activities.”
