FORFAR BAND MEMBERS EDINBURGH-BOUND FOR PIPEFEST

FOURTEEN members of Forfar and District Pipe Band are heading for Edinburgh this Saturday, to take part in a major event to boost the funds of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Pipefest 2010 will see thousands of pipers and drummers from 27 countries - including the Forfar band - march along Edinburgh's Royal Mile, led by former Scottish rugby captain Gavin Hastings.

To date, pipers and drummers have helped to raise over 768,000 at Edinburgh Pipefest events for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Event organisers are hoping that this year's Pipefest will raise 100,000 for the charity.

Pipers from all over the world are signed up to take part in this year's march including players from Mexico, Uruguay, South Africa and Japan.

The Edinburgh event marks the launch of the Pipefest Global Challenge which aims to unite the piping and drumming world in support of cancer and veteran charities worldwide.

The Challenge is made up of a number of stages in key locations around the world, with different players performing at each stage - all over a 24 hour period.

This year, the Pipefest Global Challenge will start on August 7 in Edinburgh with the final stage taking place in Coffs Harbour, Australia on August 8.

The Pipefest massed pipe band parade will march through Edinburgh's historic Old Town, past Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood House, into Holyrood Park.

The form-up point is Johnston Terrace where bands are asked to form-up from 12 noon.

The parade will start with the blast of the One O'Clock Gun, and pipers will march down to Holyrood Park.

Commenting on this year's Edinburgh Pipefest, Gavin Hastings said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to support Marie Curie Cancer Care and thousands of players as they march through Edinburgh".

Forfar Pipe Major David Myles is looking forward to participating in this major event, explaining that it is the fourth time that Forfar has been represented.

"We have been raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care through a number of events and activities," he explained.

Marie Curie Cancer Care is one of the UK's largest charities. Employing more than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, it expects to provide care to around 29,000 terminally ill patients in the community and in its hospices this year and is the largest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS.

Following their participation in Pipefest 2010, members of the Forfar band will continue their preparations for another trip abroad.

This time they are heading for Alsace Lorraine in France in October where they will play at a tattoo.

The band is always keen to boost its numbers and full details are available from Pipe Major David Myles on 01307 465851.

The bank practice nights are at Strathmore Cricket Club on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7 pm.
