Forfar swimming pool upgrade put on hold

A £125,000 improvement project for Forfar Swimming Pool has been put on hold.

Proposals to upgrade the sauna and steamroom were part of a planned £300,000 Angus Council investment in leisure centre facilities and equipment over the next two years. However, at Thursday’s meeting of the council’s neighbourhood service committee, Angus Councillor Glennis Middleton raised the possibility of the development of a sports hub at Forfar Academy, and whether the current equipment would last long enough to see that new-build come forward. She told the meeting that, whilst she would normally welcome any investment in Forfar, she had received a number of calls about the proposed spend and that further information was needed. Departmental director Ron Ashton said he would bring forward a more detailed report on the pool plan, but councillors agreed the other elements of the report which will see over 60 exercise bikes bought for over £65,000.

The Lochside Leisure Centre in Forfar and the Carnoustie and Saltie Leisure Centre in Arbroath will benefit from the new equipment. Commenting on her decision at Thursday’s meeting of Forfar Community Council, councillor Middleton added: “I think it would be wrong to agree that level of spending at Forfar Swimming Pool until further information is available.”
