THE RURAL community around Kirriemuir and Glamis was rocked on Thursday with the tragic death of a popular woodcutter as the result of an accident on a local farm.

29-year-old John Phillips of Balkeerie was killed after being crushed by a tree in woodland near to Auchendorie Farm, Westmuir,

Mr Phillips, a woodcutter by trade, had been working with a member of the Cochrane family, who own the farm, when the incident happened at about 1.45 p.m.

Police and ambulance staff attended after the alarm was raised by a fellow worker but, tragically, Mr Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Phillips is understood to have a partner and a young family but they are too upset to speak about the tragedy.

A statement by Tayside Police confirmed joint enquiries between Tayside Police and the Health and Safety Executive are ongoing and, as with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

The tragedy affected the community of Eassie and Kirriemuir, where Mr Phillips had family, with family members and neighbours describing the popular Angus business-man as “ a nice, cheery lad”.

Mr Sandy Cochrane of Auchendorie said their thoughts were with Mr Phillips’ family.

He said: “We know him well through working for us and it’s just a great loss. Our sympathies are with his family and friends.”

The sudden death has shocked the close-knit community of Balkeerie, on the outskirts of Glamis, where Mr Phillips and his family had recently settled.

A spokesperson for ENKA (the Eassie, Nevay and Kirkinch Community Association), which organises numerous community events in the area, said: “Members of the community are deeply saddened by the tragic news and would wish to support the family in anyway we can.”
