Dramatic plans for new theatre are unveiled

Members of Forfar Dramatic Society are about to embark on their most ambitious production to date - turning their clubrooms into a new theatre.

On Wednesday evening they set the scene for what they hope will be a complete transformation of their East High Street premises.

With the performance space now properly insulated following a grant award, society members are eager to take their plans on to the next level.

An invited audience was given a ‘walk through’ of the architect’s plans, beginning with a box office at the entrance followed by a flexible performance space leading through to a redeveloped storage area, wardrobe and changing area, boardroom and new toilets.

Property convener Martin McKay said the society had a very well maintained, well insulated and well regulated building.

What they now needed to do was apply for the relevant building warrant to enable them to gain a public entertainment licence.

Society president Ewan Phillip spoke of the society’s ‘vision for the future’ and its role in the local community.

He said: “We have been here since 1970 and have a very keen and focused idea of what we want this place to become. We want to turn our dream into a reality for a purpose built studio theatre. Arbroath, Carnoustie and Monifieth have these facilities and we hope we will in the very immediate future.”
