Diamond celebrations for Lord and Lady Airlie

LORD and Lady Airlie, who live at Cortachy Castle, near Kirriemuir, have enjoyed a belated diamond wedding celebration during the festive period at their home.

The couple welcomed around 150 guests for a party to celebrate 60 years after marrying in St Margaret’s Church, Westminster, in the presence of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and Princess Margaret.

The marriage took place on October 23, 1952.

The belated celebration had been arranged for the festive period to allow staff and people connected with Airlie estates over many years to share in the occasion.

The couple have six children, 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, with many of the family returning home to Angus for the celebration.

Lord Airlie served in the Scots Guards before pursuing a successful career in merchant banking.

A former Lord Lieutenant of Angus whose interests are many and varied, the earl’s role as a royal courtier included serving as Lord Chamberlain for 13 years.

The Countess of Airlie, Virginia Fortune Ryan, has been a Lady of the Bedchamber to Her Majesty The Queen.
