Boost for life-saving work
THE IMPORTANT role played by the RNLI in saving lives at sea was outlined on Saturday evening at the annual buffet dance organised by the charity’s Forfar Branch.
In welcoming almost 200 to the Reid Hall, branch president Jean Hale explained all the money raised on the night would go to fund the work of the RNLI – which depends totally on donations.
She said: “It provides a 24/7 service around our coasts manned by volunteers. Last year was one of the busiest on record. Lifeboats were launched from Scotland’s 46 stations – over 1,000 times and 1,055 people were rescued. 386 of these “shouts” took place in the dark. Locally Broughty Ferry Station continues to be the busiest in Scotland and in Montrose a new station is almost complete and it is also to have a new state of the art lifeboat. The cost of running any of these stations is £4200 a week – with your help we hope to raise that tonight!”
Mrs Hale was delighted to welcome three new members to the committee – Louise Nicoll, Elaine Greenhill and Lynda Stobbs - who bring the committee numbers up to 17.
She continued: “Also, the individual fund-raising efforts of Past President Mary White is to be recognised by the RNLI. She is to receive a silver badge in the summer. Mary has been on the committee for over 20 years serving as president, treasurer and is currently flag day organiser – well done, Mary – it’s a well deserved award and highlights the high regard the RNLI places on small fund-raising branches such as our own.”
She thanked local businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes, which raised £1,300, and local artist Johnathan Mitchell who donated an artist’s proof of the Angus Glens with the framing donated by Canvas Art.
