BAND QUINTET TUNED UP FOR SUMMER COURSE

FORFAR Instrumental Band will not be at practice next week due to a lack of players.

This does not, however, herald disaster.

In fact, it is a step towards building the band's future.

A few players will be taking their annual holiday about this time but five of the band's young members will be taking their playing to a higher level.

They will be attending the summer course of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland in St Andrews.

NYBBS was formed in 1958. In its 52 years of existence standards have risen and many more young players have found a place in the main band, the reserve band and the training band, or children's band as it is now known.

At all levels top players and teachers from all over Britain are on hand to coach the players and the bands are conducted by people who have a solid background in playing, teaching and conducting.

This is the environment that Forfar's young players will be enjoying for the week.

Kyle Buchan from Kirriemuir is quite used to this as he is attending for the fourth time but for his brother, Andrew, it will be a completely new experience.

Gregory Rose, recent finalist in the Forfar Academy Young Musician event, is making his second visit while the other Forfarians, Andrew Archibald and Samuel Hill are making their first.

Forfar Instrumental Band is providing financial support for these young players and would like to thank everyone who contributed to their many fund-raising activities and will, hopefully, contribute to some that are still to come!

Another reason to suspend practice for the week is the lack of a conductor. Gordon Evans will be at NYBBS too.

He has, for many years, conducted the reserve and training bands and is now in charge of the children's band, a section devoted to players of 13 and under.
