ANGUS COUNCIL TAX FREEZE TO CONTINUE?
ANGUS Council's finance spokesman Mark Salmond has confirmed his budget proposals will recommend a continued freeze in council tax.
Speaking on the eve of the council's budget setting meeting councillor Salmond, convener of corporate services, said: "A continued freeze in the level of council tax gives people the financial stability needed in cash strapped times.
"To achieve that we will have to agree a savings package although the measures I will be proposing will seek to protect front line services.
"However, the administration's budget proposals will also provide continued investment in the priorities we have identified and delivered on in recent years."
Councillor Salmond said the council's main budgetary priority was to ensure that Angus was in a strong position for the tough financial years ahead:
"The public sector is facing some really difficult times in the years to come with shrinking budgets and increased pressures.
"So in this year's budget I'm proposing a responsible long term approach that invests in the county's future not short term fixes that saddle Angus with debt."
Angus Council currently has the third lowest council tax in mainland Scotland with 1072 for a band D property.
The council tax for 2010/11 will be set at a special meeting of the council tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday, February 17).
