All set for Angus Sports Awards 2013

All eyes will be on Forfar once again as the town plays host to one of the most hotly anticipated events in the local sporting calendar.

The Angus Sports Awards, in association with Angus Ahead, will take place on Thursday, March 13, at the Reid Hall.

Speaking at the ticket launch, Angus Provost Councillor Helen Oswald said: “Congratulations to everyone who has been recognised in the Roll of Honour.

“These awards are a fantastic opportunity for the community in Angus to offer congratulations to all of the performers, coaches, administrators, officials, helpers and volunteers who have represented the county so positively in the sporting environment throughout 2013.”

The Roll of Honour is as follows:-

Sports Personality of the Year sponsored by Auchterhouse Country Sports. This award aims to recognise the achievements of a top sports performer in 2013. including performers that compete on Paralympic and elite levels - Maxi Hirsch, Backhold Wrestling; Lynn Calder, Boxing; Alan Soutar, Darts; Callum Leese, Cricket; Yhana Van Wees, Basketball; Abbi Grant, Football.

Young Sports Personality of the Year sponsored by Radio Tay Cash for Kids. This award aims to recognise the achievements of a top junior sports performer in 2013 - Ewan Wheat, Golf; Erin Lees, Basketball; Christian Clark, Ice Hockey; Ethan Glennie, Football; Hannah Robb, Basketball; Sarah McKenzie, Gymnastics; Jack Henderson, In Line Hockey; Caitlin Philbin, Fencing; Claire Robertson, Golf; Sam Cameron, Karate; Ellen Robertson, Athletics; Joel McFarlane, Athletics; Niamh Feighan, Athletics; Brennan Somers, Shooting; Olivia Waddell, Highland Dancing; Erin Moore, Netball; Ellie Callon, Basketball; Lauren Middleton, Badminton; Ryan Cameron, Cricket; Ethan McColgan, Football; Sophie Smith, Swimming; Abbie Clark, Equestrain; Taylor Smith, Basketball; Kayleigh Steele, Karate.

Coach of the Year sponsored by KLM Partnership Chartered Surveyors. This award aims to recognise the achievements and commitment of a sports coach in 2013. This award applies to voluntary coaches at all level - Laura Hare, Basketball; Robert Donnan, Football; Pierre Bernard, Swimming; Liz Martin, Athletics; Stephen Greenhill, Rugby; Scott Haxton, Swimming; Evelyn Smith, Ten Pin Bowling; Graeme Walker, Tennis; Scott Nicoll, Football.

Team of the Year sponsored by Angus Community Sport Hubs. This award aims to recognise the achievements and commitment of a sports team/group in 2013. This award applies to teams/groups at all levels - Tayside Special Olympics - Football ‘D’ Band Team; Arbroath High School - S2 Netball Team; Arbroath High School - S3 Netball Team; Arbroath High School Open Girls Basketball Team; Tayside Special Olympics - Team 2013; Arbroath United Cricket Club 1st XI; Arbroath High School - Under 14 Girls Basketball Team; Angus Darts Academy.

School Sport Volunteer of the Year sponsored by Angus Council Active Schools. This award aims to recognise the contribution made to extra-curricular sport across Angus schools in 2013 - Joe McCall, Carnoustie Cluster; Duncan Baynes, Southmuir Primary School; Ron McDonald, Monifieth Cluster; Mandy Muir, Borrowfield Primary School; Karen Pithie, Borrowfield Primary School; Corey Pinder, Warddykes Primary School; Holly Lamb, Warddykes Primary School; Thomas Sykes, Warddykes Primary School; Lynda Sim, Arbroath High School.

Sports Personality of the Year Award for People with a Disability sponsored by Angus Disability Sport in partnership with National Oilwell Varco. This award aims to recognise an individual with a physical, sensory or learning disability who took part in sporting activities in 2013. This award will only consider nominations for people below Paralympic and elite levels - Mark Bothwell, Athletics; Kerry Duncan, Badminton; Gary Falconer, Swimming; Kevin Trebilcock, Badminton; Courtney Bernard, Swimming; Faith Herron, Athletics; Kein Speed, Wheelchair Football; Maria Orsi, Swimming; Duncan Reid, Ten Pin Bowling; John Watt, Carpet Bowls; Bill Fairweather, Carpet Bowls.

Service to Sport Award sponsored by Dundee and Angus College. This award aims to recognise someone who has made an outstanding contribution to sport in Angus as administrator, official, coach or helper over a number of years - Derek Nisbet, Swimming; Lynn Lyburn, Swimming; John Grant, Basketball; Dick Auchinleck, Cricket; David Strachan, Boxing; Laura Smith, Disability Sport.

Club Volunteer of the Year Award sponsored by Special Olympics Great Britain. This award aims to recognise an individual within any role who has made a positive impact through their commitment to their club/group in 2013 - Eric Scott, Lawn Bowls; Ian Chisholm, Cricket; Kieran Bell, Wheeled Sports; Andrew Patterson, Wheeled Sports; Liz Martin, Athletics; Jan Fairlie, Tennis; Caroline Campbell, Rugby; Andrew McLaren, Golf; Bob Cassidy, Boccia; Janice Crow, Golf; Murray Duguid, Rugby.

The Angus Sports Awards 2013 selection panel will meet to finalise short lists and winners for each award category and these will be announced at the awards ceremony. All nominees and nominators have been invited to attend the ceremony, hosted and broadcast by Radio Tay.
