THE TEAMS taking part in this year’s Cancer Research UK Relay for Life Kirriemuir will swap walking boots for dancing shoes at the fund-raising disco being held by the local Relay for Life committee at Kirriemuir Town Hall on the evening of Saturday, March 9.
Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life is a unique celebration of life and hope which unites communities to help beat cancer and culminates in a fantastic family and team event.
Teams of between eight and 15 people - of all ages, levels of fitness and from all walks of life - are needed to take part in the overnight fund raising festival.
Keith Hopkins, the chair of the Relay for Life Kirriemuir committee, said: “Tickets are selling fast,”
Keith explained that the disco will help raise funds for the equipment and facilities needed to host the Relay for Life Kirriemuir, which involves teams of eight to 15 people walking or running around a track for 24 hours, as well as camping on site.
He added: “Marquees, gazebos, lighting, safety equipment, first aid cover and, of course, top class toilets are vital to the success of this event.
“Every penny the participating teams raise goes to Cancer Research UK’s lifesaving work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, so the committee pays for the extensive infrastructure required through sponsorship from local businesses and fund raising events, such as this fabulous disco on March 9.”
Keith added that the disco, which is for over-18s only, will feature a wide range of music, as well as a performance by Sonnet 65, a silent auction and a buffet supper.
He said: “Although it’s a fund raising event, first and foremost, the disco is a social event. It’s a great opportunity for team members to spend time together and also to get to know the other teams who will be taking part in this community event.
“However, the disco’s not only for those taking part in the Relay for Life Kirriemuir – as long as they’re over 18, everyone’s welcome to come along, have a great night and help us raise money for a very good cause.” stressed Keith,
Tickets for the event are priced at £10 and are available by calling Rhona Guild, the volunteer secretary for Kirriemuir Relay for Life committee, on 07971 454626.
To date, all the signs are pointing to another highly-successful Relay for Life Kirriemuir, which will take place over the weekend of August 10 and 11 at Kirriemuir Show Field.
“24 teams and 140 team members have already signed up for Kirrie’s Relay for Life,” said Keith. “We’re delighted with the response so far.
“The next team captains’ meeting will be at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, at the Kirriemuir Golf Club.
Team captains will be updated on the latest plans for the Relay for Life and will also be able to discuss and promote their team’s fund raising activities with the committee and the other teams. In addition, captains of new teams and anyone who is thinking about signing up for the Relay for Life Kirriemuir will be able to find out what happens at Relay For Life and how their participation can make a real difference in the battle being waged against cancer by Cancer Research UK.”
