A GROUP of campaigners bidding to have the Battle of Nechtansmere included on Historic Scotland’s Inventory of Battlefields could find out if they are successful by early 2012.
Historic Scotland have confirmed that the process of considering second tranche candidates for inclusion in the inventory will begin soon and that Nechtansmere will be looked at.
Graeme Dey, Angus South MSP, said: “Ruth Parsons, chief executive of Historic Scotland, has advised that the consideration process is to get underway this summer with a desk-based review.
“This will establish which sites are likely to meet the criteria being used and so can be taken forward sometime in the autumn to the field verification stage.
“She has also confirmed that all the information provided as part of the public consultation on this issue earlier this year, when Nechtansmere’s claims were overlooked, will be considered.
“Given this and the significant role that the battle at Dunnichen played in Scotland’s history I am optimistic it will be afforded inclusion in the inventory at the second time of asking.
“It may be several months before we find out as Historic Scotland are giving themselves until the end of the present financial year to complete their deliberations.”
