MSP Nigel Don has called for a special day of celebration to welcome the Olympic Flame as it passes through Angus North & Mearns on June 12, 2012.
The flame will travel through Stonehaven, Marykirk, Hillside, Montrose, Brechin, and Forfar on its way south to the Olympic Stadium in London.
Nigel said: “I’m absolutely delighted the Olympic Flame is coming our way. This is a once in a lifetime event and really needs to be celebrated. I hope schools and employers will be understanding about giving time off to people to welcome the Flame as it passes through their town. I would love to see every brass band, pipe band, accordion band and rock band turning out and maybe local DJs could do a roadshow. Anyone involved with any sport – athletics, football, tossing the caber, even carpet bowls should be there, making plenty of noise. With all that, I doubt if any part of the route will be as welcoming as Angus North and Mearns. We live in a beautiful part of the world, and we should take this chance to show off all the talents and enthusiasm of our people.”
Mr Don added: “They say that to be really good at something, you need to put in 10,000 hours of practice. I suspect our Olympic athletes have trained for many more hours than that, and their sheer dedication to their sport is inspiring. They deserve our support.”
