Let’s look forward to Forfar’s annual gala week

Forfar Gala Week 2014 will run from June 15 to 22. It will start with activities in the Myre Green on Sunday, June 15, from noon.

For many months, the committee has been working hard to bring together a full programme of events to entertain the public.

Among the attractions will be DD8 music, dog agility course, classic cars, a funfair and burgers.

The gala day itself on June 22 will also start at 12 noon, with a variety of performances and demonstrations and stalls on the day.

Angus Councillor Jeanette Gaul told the Dispatch: “The gala committee is delighted that Guild Homes have agreed to sponsor the event again this year.

“It is great to have a local company provide support for another year.”

Councillor Gaul continued: “This year we have the Commonwealth Games coming to Angus [in terms of the rifle shooting at Barry Buddon] and we are looking to bring some Commonwealth themes into the gala week.

“One suggestion is for those in the community who feel they can cook or bake to provide a Commonwealth recipe for tasters, to let the committee know as soon as possible in order that this can be a new addition to the event this year.”

The funfair on Gala Day will include bouncy castle, roundabouts, toy stall, bungee trampoline and rodeo bull.

Anyone who wishes to become involved in the event in any way is asked to please contact Jeanette Gaul on telephone 01307 464698 or by e-mail Jeanettegaul@talktalk.net

Newcomers to the area might not realise that the Gala in its present form is a relatively new event.

In October, 2007, the Dispatch reported that proposals to revive the Gala were being considered by the tourism arm of Forfar and Area Partnership.

Members of the FAP tourism group sub- committee, led by Jeanette Gaul (chairperson), Ken Stewart (secretary) and Davie Hay (treasurer) - discussed initiatives to promote the town, including “reviving the once-popular annual Forfar Gala Week”.
