Launch of Pubwatch

Pubwatch launched in Forfar on Monday, joining Arbroath and Montrose who already have established schemes.

The aim of this initiative is designed to enhance the safety of the night time economy for both patrons and staff within the town and is also being rolled out within other towns throughout Angus.

Forfar Pubwatch gets off to an excellent start with 14 licensed premises signing up to be part of scheme.

It is hoped others will come on board in the coming weeks and months.

Pubwatch is operated by local licensed premises and, in simple terms, allows staff at premises in the town to communicate with each other to deter violence and anti-social behaviour in their establishments.

It also provides licensed premises with a direct link to Tayside Police, where they can discuss individuals who are causing problems in the pubs, bars and clubs.

All premises that are part of Pubwatch are easily identified by the posters displayed at their entrances.

The benefit of this close working is that those who are identified as being involved in violent, disruptive criminal or anti-social behaviour will be banned from ALL Pubwatch premises, reducing the threat or fear to the majority who simply want to enjoy their night out.

Chief Inspector Sandra Richard said: “Alcohol is a contributory factor in many of the incidents police have to deal with, particularly at the weekend.

“As such, Tayside Police fully supports any initiative that aims to reduce criminal activity.

“We are encouraged to see such a large number of licensed premises within the town taking a proactive approach to ensure the safety of both their patrons and staff.

“The launch of Pubwatch in Forfar emphasises alcohol fuelled violence and disorder will not be tolerated in the town and working together in this way will ensure everybody will have a safe and enjoyable night out.”

Councillor John Whyte, convener of Angus licensing Board, said:

“As convener of Angus Licensing Board, I welcome this Pubwatch initiative, supporting and underpinning responsible drinking locally and in its stated aim of ensuring Forfar is a safe night out.”
